The freedom allows artists to produce a body of work that's authentic, raw and not restricted by the many confines of music labels. From its initial purpose in needing to record and circulate live shows to housing some of the hottest exclusives in hip hop, the mixtape has and continues to evolve. Chance the Rapper has made the mixtape synonymous to the album, all without signing to a record company. So one must ask, outside of distribution, is there still a viable space for music labels?
