Before Ava Duvernay, I'm pretty sure that I couldn't name any other women of color filmmakers off of the top of my head. While the percentage of women of color filmmakers in Hollywood is definitely comparatively dismal, many amazing Black women filmmakers have and still exist—and their work is dope.
Just to name a few, some Black women filmmakers and directors from some of my favorite movies include: Kasi Lemmons of Eve's Bayou, Gina Prince-Bythwewood of Love and Basketball and Beyond the Lights, Darnell Martin of Cadillac Records and Dee Rees of Pariah.
